Memento Mori Relic Backwork Tattoo By Jessica Astral Odyssey

This forearm tattoo is my interpretation of a memento mori relic, styled with influence from engraving techniques and Old European medieval art. At its center is an elongated hourglass, a classic symbol of mortality and vanishing time, framed by symmetrical foliage and flanked by burning sacred hearts. The flames rise upward, reflecting both spiritual ascension and inevitable decay—an elegant balance of light and impermanence. I kept the composition bold and stylized, using blackwork line patterns reminiscent of medieval woodcuts and manuscript illustrations. The whole piece feels like an artifact from another time, worn like armor, warning the wearer and the viewer alike: time devours all things.
