Memento Mori Inspired Blackwork Tattoo By Jessica Astral Odyssey

Memento Mori Inspired Blackwork Tattoo By Jessica Astral Odyssey
This piece is my take on a memento mori composition, blending engraving-style detailing with the bold clarity of American traditional tattooing. At the top sits a cracked skull with crossed bones and a scythe—a direct nod to mortality, time, and the inevitability of death. I kept the structure simple but graphic, drawing inspiration from old woodcut art and sailor tattoos, combining clean black lines with subtle dotwork shading to give it form and character. Below it, I added a web-like hourglass surrounded by sharp eight-pointed stars, acting as both a cosmic frame and a reminder that time is sacred. It's a small collection of motifs—but each one speaks to death, fate, and the quiet passage of time, delivered in a timeless visual language. This piece is my take on a memento mori composition, blending engraving-style detailing with the bold clarity of American traditional tattooing.
